my favorite movie scores

yes folks, thats SCORES not SOUNDTRACKS. two very different things. i also included a link for you to hear a sample. here goes (in no particular order):

- Elektra (Christophe Beck); great percussion, dark, tense, simple, pervasive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY_B0ezALQc

- the Bourne trilogy (John Powell); AMAZING strings, motifs, percussion, and best use of bassoon i've ever heard. relaxing, effective!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pJ9ENmzKNQ

- Amelie (Yann Tiersen); not usually a fan of piano/keyboards, but very effective here and enjoyable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aip3836VtZ0

- Transporter 3 (Alexandre Azaria); the score was enjoyable overall, even tho the main motif got annoying at times. the techno here was not my usual techno m.o. but i dug this. it was actually only about 2 songs but of course with techno it was easier for them to stretch it out to fill more time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiWZiFfdCG8

- Pirates of the Caribbean (Hans Zimmer); boy, i feel like a sellout now. whatever. for the first movie, this was a refreshing score that was well-matched to a refreshing movie. it had humor, drama, intensity, character/motifs, spirit, action, etc etc etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meb_4cEriyw

- Run Lola Run/Lola Rennt (Johnny Klimek); once again techno is FTW. crazy, pulsing, and german- how can that combination get any better? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsQFeURCk_Q

- Tomb Raider (Graeme Revell); perfect. sensual, exotic, and adventurous, just like the sexy lady herself. i effing LOVE the string chord progressions =) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-q5iXk70_w

- Memoirs of a Geisha (John Williams); eff you john williams. you win this time. brilliant, emotive, powerful strings mixed with koto, shakuhachi, and taiko drums take the edge of your repetitive, recycled string motifs. no, seriously, you win- i LOVE this score! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8QDl2XKYrM

hmmm. something tells me there may be a few more. ill update if i can remember them! please, reply with your favorites! the less john williams you post, the more you win!!! =)

  1. I SO agree on the Amelie score. It's seriously one of my favorite CD's to listen to! It would be one thing if it was just an amazing score, but it's also a insightful, wonderful movie that is only enhanced by the amazing that is the score.

I know you hate John Williams and you grudginly put him on this list, but have you listened to Schindlers List? It's hauntingly beautiful, in my opinion. But what the hell do I know?

    Miss you!
